Envy is the only vice that offers its host absolutely nothing in return. Anger has its energy. Greed has its accumulations. Lust has its pleasures, however brief. But envy? Envy is pain borrowed from another person's joy — a transaction in which you pay everything and receive nothing. He calls it to the stand, itemizes its damages, personifies it as a criminal, and then delivers a verdict backed by empirical observation.
